For anyone who has doubts about putting Brokeback
in a bisexual category at all, keep in mind this is a film about two men who sleep with both men and women. Heath Ledger told Time
, "I don't think Ennis could be labeled as gay. Without Jack Twist, I don't know that he ever would have come out.... I think the whole point was that it was two souls that fell in love with each other."
Whereas Gyllenhaal says he just thinks they were two straight guys who fell in love.
I think overall it's fair to put these guys in an ambiguous category, and, hey, we're
an ambiguous category if I've ever seen one!
Here's some questions to possibly keep in mind:
How are the bisexuals portrayed? Is it a negative portrayal (stereotypes, promiscuous, liars, cheaters) or positive?
Were the bisexual characters portrayed as gay and in denial, or straight and experimenting, etc? Or just a genuine "fence sitter"?
How do you think mainstream audiences will see the portrayal?
Is it any good at all, just in general?
